My approach is based on the NLP spelling strategy. NLP stands for neuro-linguistic programming, which John Grinder and Richard Bandler developed in California in the 1970s. Essentially, NLP grew out of the desire to understand ‘the difference that makes the difference’ between therapists whose clients achieved excellent recovery rates and those who didn’t. In seeking to understand the ‘difference that makes the difference’ between good and bad spellers, the NLP spelling strategy came into being.
Without going into too much detail, good spellers use a visual strategy to check that they are spelling words correctly. There are two pieces of good news here:
- Everyone has the ability to visualize, and it’s an ability that can be strengthened;
- A visual spelling strategy is far more effective than a phonetic one, which in English at least, will only ever give you a correct answer 50% of the time.
